I think the fact that your 1770 lack volume out of your motherboard does seem to suggest that a seperate amp/dac may be helpful.
i have the MK2s, and my Element4 should arrive tomorrow.
I also own a DT 1770 Pro Mk2 . I pair it with a Fosi audio K7. If I max the volume on my dac/amp the mk1770 start to distort.
